HPISD School Board Election, Vaccines, and Ways to help at the Texas Leg

VOTE: HPISD Board of Trustees Election

PCWDA believes there is a clear choice in the upcoming election forHPISDBoard of TrusteesPlace 1(the only contested seat). PCDWA has taken the time to meet both candidates and believes Doug Woodward has the experience, vision, and deep understanding needed for HPISD Board of Trustees, Place 1. If you have yet to learn about the candidates, please take some time to do so. This election could come down to single digit votes. We encourage everyone to vote, bring friends, and tell neighbors! The deadline to register to vote or to update your registration is April 1. Click on the Dallas County Votes button below for more information.

TURNOUT IS EVERYTHING! The election is May 1, and early voting runs from 4/19-4/27. The most recent contested HPISD Trustee election in 2019 yielded a voter turnout of 3424 voters across the three candidates. Given the number of registered voters across HPISD, this is a very low turnout. While many residents have strong opinions about who they would like to see installed in Place 1, few historically make the effort to cast their vote. Sadly, even fewer folks bother to learn about the various candidates to understand their vision for and potential contributions to HPISD. While not as bold and exciting as national or state races (HPISD Board positions are non-partisan), these are the elections that help to shape our community, schools and indirectly, home values - through those we elect to leadership positions.

Did you know that our TX legislature is currently in session until 5/31? And that it only meets every other year? This means that there is a mountain of legislation for our state legislators to get through. Here are three ways you can make your voices heard.

Support Access to Services for Students with Dyslexia (HB 3870/3880 and SB 1693/1694)
A small, grassroots and bipartisan group of HPISD parents are hoping to generate support for a bill that will help TX students with dyslexia get the education services they are entitled to under federal education law (IDEA). Currently these students are being denied access to their rights under federal education law, the Individuals with Disabilities in Education Act (IDEA). Families of students with dyslexia and those who support them ask Texas legislators to vote YES on HB 3870 / 3880 and SB 1693 / 1694. Learn more and show your support here.

Condemn AAPI Violence and Hate (HCR 66)
TX HB HCR 66, filed by Texas House Representative Gene Wu (HD137), is a resolution condemning AAPI violence and hate. Please consider urging Morgan Meyer to support HCR66, since none of us want Asian hate to thrive.

Support Medicaid Expansion
Finally, check out TX Senator Nathan Johnson's (TX SD-16) creative and informative video where he takes an entertaining look at how Medicaid expansion works for Texas, and calls upon all Texans to learn the facts and advocate for immediate expansion.
