It’s finally here. We can finally start voting to have a new president. Early voting in the primaries start today, Tuesday, February 18, 2020.
So why are we all so tired, anxious, and cautious? Don’t let that wear you down! If you’ve ever run a marathon, or heard about running a marathon, you’ve heard of “the wall.” This feels like the wall, and we know it may be the first of many. But what we do now matters, a lot! To quote one of our most tireless friends and leaders,
“If you are feeling discouraged and confused, remember that is the objective of the propaganda and disinformation campaigns. Do not take the bait. Do not stop working for the democracy you want to live in. Vote. Tell your friends to vote. Vote all the way down the ballot. You don’t have to be a pundit and second guess the result. Just vote for who you think would be the best in office, and let’s see how it turns out. But let’s not give up, just because we’re not sure of the results in advance.”
So. here’s the plan.
PCDWA Happy Hour on Thursday at 6 PM. Check your email (and your spam!!) for the address. If you aren’t a member, email membership@pcdwa.org to join. Come to have a drink, relax, hear from a whole host of presidential campaigns, and talk with friends about down ballot races too.
Check out your sample ballot. You can find it here, at dallascountyvotes.org.
If you are undecided about the races, you can check out the voter’s guide put together by the Dallas League of Women Voters. The Dallas Morning News has opinions too. And the Texas Tribune has a guide to the Senate Candidates. Or, come to the happy hour! Hear lots of opinions and make up your own mind.
And then Vote. Vote early. (Don’t vote often, that’s illegal.) Wondering if you should wait until after South Carolina and Nevada to vote? In the brilliant words of one of our precinct chairs:
“Election Day and last day or two of early voting may be difficult due to long lines. The ballot is long, voting machinery is new to most people, and no single party voting may cause things to go slowly. Plan accordingly.”
There are early voting locations all over the county. The closest to the Park Cities are at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church and at Park Cities United Methodist Church. Here’s a (very cool) map that shows the locations if you want to find one close to work or play.
Remember to take your list of down ballot races on paper, because you can’t take your phone into the voting booth.
See you Thursday!!
