“Trump is counting on the fact that too many people are still not paying enough attention or [are] becoming so overwhelmed that they tune it all out”

“The most common way people give up their power is by thinking they don’t have any”

Of course the new maps passed the Lege! But House Dems succeeded in rallying blue states to the cause! California is prepped to nullify the Texas cheating! Other blue states are ready to lean-in if new red states redistrict! TX State House Democrats are national heroes, finally showing what fighting back looks like!
Why doesn’t this feel like a win?
Much of what we’re reading today is about activism fatigue and how MAGA is using this to get us to accept the unacceptable. Michelle Davis, of Lone Star Left, exhorts us not to give in to nihilism. Jay Kuo and Joyce Vance discuss the techniques MAGA’s using to get us to think of these policies as a “new normal”, and the Substack How to Resist publishes a list of 45 resistance ideas for ordinary citizens.
Practice self-care. Take a news break. Plan a week-end girls (or boys!) trip. But come back and keep your eyes on the ball. Trump’s plans include making sure he doesn’t get impeached in 2027 by cheating however he can in 2026. Pick one or two issues you want to get worked up about and get worked up! - but let the rest go.
As Joyce Vance says, we’re in this together.
What you may have missed this month
August Meeting
Kardal Coleman & Kathleen Thompson:
What just happened in Austin?
A packed room sat rapt while Kathleen Thompson (from Progress Texas) shared PT’s viral clips from on the ground in Austin, while Kardal Coleman (chair of the Dallas County Democratic Party) discussed what happened behind the scenes - and what the new maps mean for Dallas races! (Spoiler alert: it’s throwing everything into chaos!).
We also got to meet two more candidates for Texas’ 24th Congressional District. Nathan Hawks and Jon Buchwald. If you missed it, meet them and Kevin Burge, as well as Allison Mitchell running for the Texas House in district 108, at a precinct chair Meet and Greet on Sept 13 (see more info, below).
