November Newsletter

This is why we can’t have nice things!

We had a terrific showing at No Kings Day on Oct. 18.  Even here in Dallas (in the pouring rain!) thousands showed up - and 7 or 8 million showed up nation-wide!  (Keep scrolling for our images of the Dallas protest).

Is it just a coincidence that one person in particular had a bad weekend?  What started with an image of flying poop turned into the literal destruction of one of our most treasured symbols of government (paired with Mike Johnson’s continued metaphorical destruction of the House wing of the Capitol), and this is why we can’t have nice things. Like a healthy workforce, or children not too hungry to learn in school.

What’s next?  Even with the beginnings of the holiday season, let’s make resistance something we do every day. This November has several good opportunities! See a few suggestions, below.

What to do in November

VOTE!  Election Day is November 4!

Every election is important, and this one is as well - but it may be harder to get your arms around why for this one. This election is about 17 proposed amendments to the Texas Constitution. The consensus at our October meeting on this topic (see below) is that these amendments are conservative wolves in sheep’s clothing. Many of them sound quite reasonable “more money for good things!” “less taxes!” but rely on a Governor-appointed board for oversight, or don’t promise to reimburse local entities with state funds for property tax cuts.

Many of us at the meeting differed on whether we valued spending on that particular priority more than we distrusted the current state government (or the other way around). But we agreed that these issues could have been funded by normal legislation: is the elevation to a constitutional amendment only to make them more difficult to reverse if the government swings left?

BOYCOTTS - Let’s hit them where it hurts!

#1:  Thanksgiving Weekend Blackout

Let’s face it. By the Tuesday before Thanksgiving, you’ve already purchased your holiday groceries. And leftovers ought to carry you through to the following Tuesday (if needed, you can find your favorite locally owned grocer or restaurant to tide you over). So, they’re really asking you to skip those door-buster Black Friday and Cyber Monday deals - and are they really such great deals anymore?

Black Friday and its siblings have been the bell-weather for retail for decades. Let’s show them who really has the power in America!

#2 - Boycott the Collaborators

If you like your boycotts targeted, we’ve found a few lengthy, detailed lists for your consideration.

CNN has assembled a list of ballroom donors. The list includes donations by owners and CEOs, previous Trump PAC donations, and other facts that could influence your future purchasing decisions.

Andra Watkins has a two-part series on where you can feel good about your spending:  Part One and Part Two are here. She also has a Proton Drive list that’s a very detailed summary of her research.

#3 - Take Back Tesla

Tesla’s shareholders are currently voting on approval of a trillion-dollar pay package for Elon Musk. Because today’s oligarchs need a few more zeros in their net worth??

Olivia Juliana has a great summary of what you can do to stop this.  First - you may already be a shareholder! Mutual Funds you own may hold shares of Tesla, and you can reach out to the fund manager to tell him/her how you want them to vote! Then, there are shares held in public portfolios.  Click here to learn how you can quickly put pressure on state financial officials to say No! to Elon.  The voting ends November 6!

What you may have missed this month

October Meeting: What’s on the ballot?

Many thanks to Elaine Campbell of the League of Women Voters for leading a spirited discussion about the 17 constitutional amendments on our November ballot. The prevailing questions were “Is this really a constitutional issue?  Can’t the legislature just pass a bill to do this?” and “Is the state going to make up for the shortfall to the local budgets for this tax cut?”

If you haven’t voted yet - don’t wait!  There are important questions which will be enshrined in our Constitution unless we vote. Turnout so far has been dismal - your voice is needed!!  Check here to see the summary of our conversation.

PCA Dems at the No Kings Rally

Many thanks, again, to our hosts, The Londoner, in Mockingbird Station for supporting our group of communists, antifa and terrorists in making dangerous signs for the No Kings protest. (Carol found the only certified Antifa member at the rally. He was brutal, indeed).

Even the torrential rains couldn’t tamper our spirits as we joined thousands of other Dallas-ites in pronouncing that the United States has no kings!

On this call, the Dallas County Democratic Party will answer the question: What’s a Precinct Chair and How Do I Get Involved at the Party?! The position of precinct chair is generally the party job closest to the actual action: meeting, motivating, and mobilizing the voters themselves, who happen to be your neighbors and friends!  If you're fired up and looking to step up and really make a difference, this is the perfect opportunity at a crucial political moment.

We can make this Texas a Texas that works for everyone, but we can’t do it without you – we look forward to seeing you on the call!
